The Mighty Maine Potato!

So, have you heard the news about HOMER SIMPSON?

The Maine potato industry got an unexpected prime-time plug Sunday night when Homer Simpson, America's most famous cartoon glutton, endorsed the state's spuds.

In a subplot that had Homer's bountiful body sporting tattoo advertisements for various products, "Eat Maine Potatoes" was stamped across one arm.

But did you know that the Maine Potato is a WAR HERO? From what I recall it was during the campaign in the Solomon Islands when the USS O'Bannon, a destroyer, came upon a Japanese Submarine. The ship was too close to the sub to use its guns and the surfaced sub became aware of the vessel and its men went top side to man the deck gun. The sailors aboard O'Bannon began to pelt the Japanese sailors with potatoes! A barrage of Potatoes at night probably looked like a barrage of grenades. The Japanese Sailors busied themselves with the task of tossing the grenades back at O'Bannon and into the sea. This bought the O'Bannon time to get into gun range and to sink the Japanese Sub.
